TALENT / INT Course on Nuclear Forces

Campus Living

Information for summer-school students who are staying in UW housing. Housing for all but two students on campus will be in McMahon Hall. The other two are in Haggett Hall.

Dorm Amenities

The dormitory has shared community bath facilities. The dorm will provide: bed linens and towels, soap, and drinking cups. Housekeeping changes guest towels and empties wastebaskets every day; linen is exchanged once a week. A desk lamp may be checked out from the front desk. There is Ethernet access in every room for those who bring their laptops. The dorms are not air-conditioned, but there is a small fan in each room.

Note: cooking utensils are not provided. You should also bring items such as irons, clock radios, etc. with you.

Dorm Restrictions

The following rules are strictly enforced:

  • Pets are not allowed.
  • Overnight guests in your sleeping room are not allowed.
  • Campus facilities offer a smoke-free environment. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public areas as well as sleeping rooms.
  • Guests 21 years of age and older may consume alcohol only in the privacy of their own sleeping rooms with the door closed. Minors may not be present in the same room where alcohol is being consumed.

Conference Card (Meal Plan)

When you check in, you will be issued a Conference Card that can be used to buy food at all cafeterias, coffee bars, and cafés on campus. This includes the fixed-price "All-You-Care-to-Eat" dining service offered in The 8 at McMahon and card-operated vending machines on campus. The card will initially be credited with the full amount that you have been allocated for the duration of your stay on campus. It will operate like a debit card; funds will be subtracted from the total as you use it, with the receipt showing the remaining balance. There is no restriction on the amount you may spend each day. The meal dollars can be used at any time while you are in residence. However, there is no credit for retaining unspent funds, and meal dollars are non-transferable.

Campus meal service hours are typically shortened during the summer. Places to eat on campus and summer dining hours.

Other Dining Options and Nearby Grocery Stores

University Way ("the Ave") is home to many affordable restaurants.

Trader Joe's along Roosevelt Way NE, and Safeway and QFC in University Village are convenient grocery options nearby.

Laundry

Community laundry rooms are located in every residence hall. They are operated using the plastic Conference Card that will be issued to you when you check in (see above) and no other method of payment. Laundry funds are not automatically provided on conference cards, so you must add money to your Conference Card laundry account at the Conference Desk. These funds are also nonrefundable and can only be used in washers and dryers, so you should carefully consider how much you deposit. Laundry supplies and other sundries are sold at The Nook in McMahon and Ian's Domain in McCarty Hall (6-O and 4-O on the campus map) nearby.

Instructions for using the washers and dryers are posted. Weekends are usually the busiest times in the laundry rooms, so plan accordingly. All laundry rooms and equipment should be left clean. You can check the availability and status of washers and dryers in real time by visiting LaundryView from a campus IP address.

Phones

Most residents opt to use personal cell phones while in residence. Please note that cell-phone coverage varies in different areas and is not guaranteed in the rooms. Telephones providing free local service are located in the common area or lounge on each residential floor. These telephones may be used for outgoing local calls or toll-free calls but are not programmed to receive calls. The Conference Desk staff will take brief messages and will post the names of guests for whom messages have been received at the Conference Desk. The Conference Desk will not accept collect or person-to-person calls.
