Location
Furnished housing for sublet is not always available within walking distance
of the INT, but can usually be found in nearby neighborhoods. Most of these
neighborhoods have direct Metro bus service to the University District.
The University of Washington does not own any apartments or houses for rent
by visiting faculty. A quiet and suitable sublet in the University District
is seldom available.
Process
Once you have returned your "visitor information" form, the program
coordinator can review private listings as they become available, and forward
information to you. If you are interested in a particular accommodation,
the program coordinator will meet with the owner to inspect the accommodation.
The program coordinator will then make a recommendation and advise you on
the next appropriate action. If you have a friend in Seattle that would
be willing to find a sublet or inspect an accommodation for you, please
let us know as this would be very helpful.
It is very important for you to keep the program coordinator informed on where
and how you may be reached before your arrival to Seattle. The best (and
most affordable) sublets rent very quickly, and a quick reply is often critical.
Sublets become available for rent for a variety of reasons (vacation, business trips,
sabbaticals, etc.), and therefore, it is impossible to anticipate the number
of sublet options that will be available for your visit. We will try to
find comfortable accommodations for everyone and greatly appreciate your
flexibility and patience during the process.
Resources
For your information, there are several resources that we use to locate
privately-owned accommodations available for rent:
In addition, the INT periodically places notices in the Seattle Weekly,
and distributes flyers to University of Washington departments.
Cost
Sublets can range in price from $850 to over $2200 per month. A deposit
for first month's rent is usually required in advance (by check or wire
transfer) to finalize the rental agreement. In addition, a refundable damage
deposit is usually required; the amount of this deposit will vary. In some
cases, a private sublet may involve looking after pets, house plants, or
a garden. Because of the higher initial cost in the form of a security deposit,
first month's rent, etc., and the logistics involved in arranging such an
accommodation, we recommend private sublets only for stays of one month
or more.
Shared Accommodations
The details of shared apartments or houses will vary; a basic arrangement
would include a private bedroom that is fully furnished (including linens),
and access to kitchen facilities, bath and any other shared living space.
Typically, rent includes all utilities except for long-distance telephone
charges. Rent does not include meals or housekeeping.
Rent
for shared apartments or houses can range from $500-850 per month depending
on the situation and amenities. A deposit for first month's rent is usually
required in advance (by check or wire transfer) to finalize the rental agreement.
In addition, a refundable damage deposit is usually required; the amount
of this deposit will vary.
