To do x-ray tomography, an x-ray beam is passed through the sample and the resulting image recorded. More images are then recorded as the sample (or the beam) is rotated from 0 to 180 degrees. This results in a series of images each containing a picture of the sample from different angles. This is amazingly enough information to completely reconstruct the sample’s internal structure!
