Chapter 15: Problem 31

Question: Show that the general relationships between the two initial values of position, x(0), and velocity, v(0), and the amplitude tex2html_wrap_inline283 and phase angle tex2html_wrap_inline285 of Eq.6, are tex2html_wrap_inline287 and tex2html_wrap_inline289,

Solution:

We have that tex2html_wrap_inline291 and after taking first derivative wrt time, we find tex2html_wrap_inline293. Evaluating both expressions at time t=0, gives tex2html_wrap_inline297 and tex2html_wrap_inline299. Therefore, we have that tex2html_wrap_inline289 by dividing one expression by the other. Further, we use the fact that tex2html_wrap_inline303, to write tex2html_wrap_inline305, from which it follows that tex2html_wrap_inline287.
