Chapter 15: Problem 9

Question:The scale of a spring balance reading from tex2html_wrap_inline247 is tex2html_wrap_inline249 long. A package is suspended from the balance is found to oscillate vertically with a frequency of tex2html_wrap_inline251. How much does the package weigh.

Solution: Firstly, lets convert everything to units that we know. tex2html_wrap_inline253 gives tex2html_wrap_inline255, tex2html_wrap_inline257 gives tex2html_wrap_inline259. We can determine the spring constant, k assuming the spring is behaving linearly where the measurements have been made using the relation tex2html_wrap_inline263, and hence tex2html_wrap_inline265. For an object of mass m, on a spring, with spring constant k, we know that the angular frequency, tex2html_wrap_inline267 for small oscillations is given by tex2html_wrap_inline269. Therefore, given that we know tex2html_wrap_inline271, where f is the frequency of oscillation (measured in Hz), we have tex2html_wrap_inline275.

The mass is then tex2html_wrap_inline277.
