The life of Adilet Imambekov, who spearheaded the organization of this Workshop, ended tragically on July 18, 2012. Despite his short career, his presence in the quantum condensed matter and cold atoms communities was prominent. His work had a strong impact on non-equilibrium physics of low-dimensional systems, and is widely recognized. What is equally important, Adilet was a highly interactive and genuinely kind person. He was a key participant of many conferences and workshops, people flocked to him. He was truly one of the very brightest physicists of his generation.
