REU Application Information

Greetings from the University of Washington!

Thank you for your interest in the University of Washington Physics Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. This year's program will run from June 21 - August 27, 2004.

Please note: All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Admission is competitive. Admission preference will be given to physics majors who will have completed their junior years by Summer, 2004. We may make exceptions for younger students if they are highly qualified. Women and minority group members are especially encouraged to apply.

    General REU Information

    Program

Promising undergraduates will participate in basic research during a ten-week summer program on the campus of the University of Washington. Each student will be paired with a faculty advisor who will support and guide the student's efforts.

The University of Washington REU program differs from some others in that it covers most subfields of physics. All of the major groups in the department will be participating:

  • Astrophysics
  • Atomic physics
  • Condensed matter physics
  • Nuclear physics
  • Particle physics
  • Physics education

Our department is famous for "table-top" experiments that push the bounds of precision. We also have vigorous theory groups, including the Department of Energy's national center in nuclear theory, which brings large numbers of visiting faculty to the UW year around. Thus there are many opportunities for students to do exciting work.

    Eligibility

Preference will be given to physics majors who will have completed their junior years by Summer, 2004, though exceptions may be made for highly qualified younger students. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Admission is competitive. All the materials in each application (including GPA, transcript, and letters of recommendation) will be considered.

Women and minority group members are especially encouraged to apply. Because the University of Washington Physics/Astronomy building conforms to the latest ADA standards, we can meet the needs of physically challenged students.

    Location

The UW REU takes place on the Seattle campus of the University of Washington. Seattle is a major metropolitan center within easy traveling of unique outdoor recreation opportunities. The city is dramatically situated between the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, freshwater lakes, and Puget Sound.

The new Physics/Astronomy building provides state-of-the-art laboratories for precision experiments and superbly-equipped shops, including a large student shop which participants in the program will use.

    Dates

The 10-week program runs from June 21 to August 27. All students must make a commitment to participate for a full 10-week period. It may be possible to shift this period one or two weeks for students who cannot remain in Seattle through because of an early Fall term.

    Support

The stipend for the 10-week program is $3400. During the program, students will be housed in a campus dormitory, in single rooms, with weekly linen service provided. The pre-paid meal card will cover the majority of food expenses (approximately two meals, on campus, per student, per day). Travel costs to and from Seattle will be covered up to a maximum of $500/student.

    Sponsors

The program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the University of Washington Department of Physics, and the Department of Energy's Institute for Nuclear Theory.
