X-ray microtomography is more commonly known as computed axial tomography, or a CAT scan. It allows for three-dimensional pictures of very small objects without destruction, in contrast with traditional techniques such as optical microscopes, which require the sample to be cut in order to look inside. X-ray microscopy can view very small objects as well. Our samples were no bigger than 2 mm across and we could resolve features on the order of a few microns.
