Position Description:

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) of Michigan State University invites applications for two open faculty positions, one in experimental and one in theoretical nuclear physics or nuclear astrophysics. Candidates must exhibit a promise for excellence in both teaching and research. The successful candidate will be a member of the NSCL faculty where she/he is expected to establish an internationally recognized research program, and will normally have a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy that provides the opportunity to teach and supervise graduate students.

The NSCL has recently completed a facility upgrade that will provide rare isotope beam capabilities unparalleled in the U.S. for the next decade. In addition, a number of new instruments are being developed and brought on-line.

Research at the NSCL addresses key questions concerning the creation of the elements in the cosmos and the role of nuclei in astrophysical environments, the limits of nuclear stability, the properties of nuclei with very unusual neutron-to-proton ratios, and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter and its astrophysical implications.

The NSCL offers many opportunities for collaborative research, with support from an expert technical staff. There is also a tradition of frequent interaction between the experimental and nuclear theory groups. For more information about the NSCL visit our website: http://www.nscl.msu.edu/.

Depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidates, the positions can be filled at the assistant, associate or full professor levels. Applicants please send a resume, including a list of publications, and the names and addresses of at least three references to Prof. Brad Sherrill, Associate Director for Nuclear Science, NSCL, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1321. Michigan State University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity institution. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
