Chapter 19: Problem 2

Question: By rocking a boat, a child produces surface waves on a previously quiet lake. It is observed that the boat performs 12 oscillations in tex2html_wrap_inline371, and also that a wave crest reaches shore tex2html_wrap_inline373 away in tex2html_wrap_inline375. Find

  1. The frequency of the waves.
  2. The speed of the waves.
  3. The wavelength of the waves.

Solution:

If there are 12 oscillations in tex2html_wrap_inline371, then the period of the wave is tex2html_wrap_inline381, and therefore the frequency of the wave is tex2html_wrap_inline383. The wave travels tex2html_wrap_inline373 away in tex2html_wrap_inline375, and so its speed is tex2html_wrap_inline389. Using the relation that tex2html_wrap_inline391, where tex2html_wrap_inline393 is the wavelength of the wave, we have that tex2html_wrap_inline395.
