Chapter 20: Problem 36

Question: The strings of a cello have a length L. By what length tex2html_wrap_inline583 must they be shortened by fingering to change the pitch by a frequency ratio r. Find tex2html_wrap_inline583, if tex2html_wrap_inline589 and tex2html_wrap_inline591.

Solution: The condition for resonance on a string of length L with two fixed ends is tex2html_wrap_inline595, where k is the wave number and tex2html_wrap_inline599 is an integer. Using tex2html_wrap_inline601 and tex2html_wrap_inline603, we can show that tex2html_wrap_inline605 is the frequency corresponding to the integer n. Now shortening the string by an amount tex2html_wrap_inline583, means that each resonance frequency is increased to tex2html_wrap_inline611. Now tex2html_wrap_inline613, and hence tex2html_wrap_inline615. So for r=6/5 gives tex2html_wrap_inline619, r=5/4 gives tex2html_wrap_inline623, r=4/3 gives tex2html_wrap_inline627, r=3/2 gives tex2html_wrap_inline631.
