Postdoctoral Fellows: Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries

The newly established NSF Hub N3AS -- Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries - intends to make 2-4 postdoctoral fellow appointments for fall 2017. N3AS is a multi-institutional collaboration linking eleven institutions, focused on theory issues in neutrino and nuclear astrophysics, dense matter and neutron star structure, nucleosynthesis, and dark matter. Successful candidates will be appointed through UC Berkeley, spend two years in residence at one of the N3AS sites (Kentucky, Los Alamos, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio University, Wisconsin), followed by a third year at one of the three N3AS centers (UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, U. Washington/INT). The three-year appointments (dependent on satisfactory performance) have an initial salary of $60K and include travel allowances, to enable Fellows to more easily collaborate among the participating institutions, as well as modest relocation allowances. More details on N3AS can be found at https://n3as.wordpress.com/.

Applications will be reviewed and Fellow selections made by the N3AS PIs, Baha Balantekin, Joe Carlson, Vincenzo Cirigliano, Andre DeGouvea, George Fuller, Stefano Gandolfi, Susan Gardner, Wick Haxton, Dan Kasen, Jim Lattimer, Gail McLaughlin, Daniel Phillips, Madappa Prakash, Yong-Zhong Qian, Sanjay Reddy, and Rebecca Surman. Placement of the Fellows at the N3AS sites and centers will be done in consultation with the successful candidates. NA3S has important connections to other initiatives in nuclear and particle physics and astrophysics, including topical collaborations and major computation programs funded under SciDAC and the Exascale Challenge initiative.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in theoretical physics or astronomy and the ability to work productively within a diverse and collaborative research environment, producing and publishing original research, and defending that research effectively in seminars and scientific meetings.

Requested application materials: Please submit your CV, a publication list, a statement of research interest, and arrange for three letters of reference. In the research statement, please indicate the topics and N3AS institutions (sites and centers) that might be of interest to you, based on the descriptions found on the Network's web site. Materials should be submitted online at AJO.

To ensure full consideration, interested candidates are requested to submit their applications before the deadline of December 31, 2016.

For further inquiries please contact Wick Haxton (haxton [at] berkeley [dot] edu). Appointments will be made through UC Berkeley, so that Fellow benefit packages will be continuous over the three-year appointments. UC Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status.
