Workshop on Relativistic Density Functional Theory for Nuclear Structure
September 20 - 24, 2004


Models based on the concepts of nonrenormalizable effective relativistic field theories and covariant density functional theory have been applied very successfully to the description of a variety of nuclear structure phenomena. Although the most successful relativistic nuclear structure models are purely phenomenological, these models exploit basic properties of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at low energies, in particular symmetries and the separation of scales.

In this workshop recent advances in relativistic models of nuclear structure will be reviewed. An important goal of the workshop will be to establish a more direct relation between relativistic mean-field phenomenology and low-energy QCD. A very promising approach in this direction are effective field theories based on QCD. Another important topic will be the relation between covariant density functional theory and other modern approaches to the nuclear many-body problem.
