Microscopic Nuclear Structure Theory

September 27, 2004 - December 3, 2004

This program aims to bring together two communities of investigators, those working on NN and NNN interactions and those working on the nuclear many-body problem, so as to build on the the recent advances in both areas. In particular, recent successes in few-nucleon systems offer encouragement for developing extensions to heavier nuclei. Future progress will rely on a better understanding of the interactions among nucleons, based on the underlying quark degrees of freedom utilizing Chiral Perturbation Theory. Of special interest is the role of 3N interactions in determing nuclear structure. This topic will be studied in depth. The overall goal is to advance our knowledge of nuclear structure on the microscopic level in all mass regions, especially with regard to nuclei near the driplines and those of interest in nucleosythesis and in future experiments at the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA).

Other topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • the structure of effective operators, such as the radius, the quadrupole moment, electromagnetic transition operators, etc.

  • consistent treatment of regulators/cutoffs between the 2/3-body systems and the many-body system.

  • benchmark comparisons of different many-body methods, as well as efficiency tests

  • advances in computational methods for the nuclear few and many-body problem relativistic effects

During the first week of our program a workshop will be held to discuss and define the issues to be investigated during the remainder of the program.
