  7. Lecture Location and Schedule

Must Read for Students:

  1. 1.We ask that you register for the Dorm room by June 17, but absolutely no later than June 21th. Information about this process will be available shortly. The cost for the dorm room to you is $69, and this will cover the entire cost of the school.

  2. 2.You are generally expected to arrive on Sunday July 14th and depart on Saturday July 27. You will be able to get access to your room (and receive your meal card) even if you arrive very late at night. In some exceptional circumstances, students will need to arrive or leave on different dates and you should let us know if this is the case. When you register for your dorm room, you can indicate your alternate arrival/departure time. You can then stay in the dorm room extra nights and pay for the extra nights ($69/night).

Must Read for Lecturers:

  1. 1.Since the school is overbooked, we ask that you make your travel plans by June, 15th, so that perhaps we can admit one or two more students. See the agenda here: nnpss2013_timetable-2.pdf.

  2. 2.Housing for lecturers is in the campus hotel. As soon as you know your travel schedule, please contact Diane Vigliotta, diane.vigliotta AT stonybrook.edu, (631)-632-8135. She will make the hotel reservation and, if necessary, arrange for a shuttle to pick you up at JFK or LaGuadia Airport. We get a reduced rate for lecturers making their room reservation before June 15th. We may be able to invite one or two more students if all lecturers finalize their plans sooner rather than later.

  3. 3.You may feel that you need a rental car for various reasons. We leave this decision at your discretion.

  4. 4.Finally, while there is a small whiteboard in the lecture-hall, we are assuming that all lectures will be based on slides projected from your own laptop. If you need a blackboard, we will need to work that out, so you should let us know.

Traveling by Air:

Stony Brook is serviced by three airports which are listed in order of ease:

  1. 1.Long Island Islip McArthur Airport (ISP)

  2. 2.John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK)

  3. 3.LaGaurdia Airport (LGA)

  4. 4.Newark Airport (EWR) -- 4 hours by train away from Stony Brook.

For professors arriving at JFK or Laguardia that don't wish to take the train, you can contact Diane Vigliotta, diane.vigliotta AT stonybrook.edu, (631)-632-8135 and she will arrange for pickup at the Airport with a shared van. (I prefer the train.)

Islip Airport:

Islip airport is probably the easiest: From Islip, one would take a taxi to Stony Brook for approximately $30 each way. Village Taxi has an on-site representative located just outside of baggage claim to help keep passengers moving from the terminal to the taxi stand. A phone number for the taxi is

JFK Airport:

Travel to and from JFK is also easy:

  1. 1.The recommended public option (which is easy) is to take the AirTrain from the airport to Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Jamaica Station (http://lirr42.mta.info). You will pay for the Air Train when you get off at Jamaica Station. Inside the Jamaica Station, you can purchase a ticket for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) from the electronic kiosks, or go downstairs where there is a person handling the sale of tickets. The ticket you need is for the Port Jefferson Line from Jamaica Station to Stony Brook Station (one stop before Port Jefferson). The train to Stony Brook station takes two hours when all is said and done.
Once you arrive at the Stony Brook Station you can walk to the dorms / hotel (15/20 minutes), or take the campus bus (http://www.stonybrook.edu/transportation/campusbus/bus_map.shtml, or take a cab (see below). The Bus runs every 30 minutes from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. in the summer. The only line that will be at the station is the green line, line O=Outer Line.

  2. 2.Another option is to use a shuttle or limo to get to Stony Brook. This method is not much faster than the train. Three shuttles that people have used are Spartan Limousine, the Winston Shuttle, and the SuperShuttle. These shuttles cost approximately $80 each way. We recommend Spartan Limousine. Links and numbers for these are:

    3. iii.http://www.supershuttle.com: 1-800-258-3826.

  3. La Guardia Airport:

From LaGuardia one also has several options:

  1. 1.Take a taxi to Jamaica Station (~15 min, $20). From there follow the directions given for the JFK airport. You will enter from the street level and head upstairs to the tracks.

  2. 2.Use a shuttle or limo to get from LaGuardia to Stony Brook. See the note given above for the JFK airport.

  3. 3.Take public transport to get from LaGuardia to Jamaica Station. It's kind of a fun, a bit involved, but safe and effective. (I do it regularly, but I'm local). Since this method is only for those who like to explore, I have provided the link, here. Generally, this will involve taking the Q33 bus, and the E subway to Jamaica station. From there follow the directions given above for the JFK airport. I have generally found bus taking New Yorker's remarkably willing to help.

Newark Airport:

Although Newark is quite far from Stony Brook, it can be markedly cheaper. In addition, the transportation to and from Newark is simple, but takes several hours. In this case one takes the AirTrain to New Jersey Transit (www.panynj.gov.airports/ewr-to-from.html). Then one takes New Jersey Transit trains into New York's Penn Station. From there one takes the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Port Jefferson line from New York Penn Station to Stony Brook Station (http://lirr42.mta.info). From there you can walk or take the campus bus (see the link for the JFK airport)

Traveling by Amtrak Train:

Here one would take the Amtrak Train to New York's Penn Station. From there one would take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) on the Port Jefferson Line from Penn Station to Stony Brook Station (http://lirr42.mta.info). From there you can walk to the dorms or the hotel.

You can also take the Amtrak train to Bridgeport, and take the ferry to Port Jefferson where you can get a cab.

Traveling by the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry:

If you are driving, you will get off the Ferry and drive to Stony Brook (www.88844ferry.com). The cost of the ferry with a car is approximately $55 and $15 without a car. If you are not driving, you can take a cab from the Ferry dock to Stony Brook. Usually there are cabs outside of the ferry. But if not, you can call:

  1. 1.Islandwide Transportation (631)-331-5959

  2. 2.Lindy's Taxi: (631)-473-0707

For most on the east coast (e.g. Amherst, Yale, MIT, etc) this is the best bet.

Traveling by Car and Parking:

It is possible to drive and to park on the Stony Brook campus. Students staying in the dorm or the hotel can park in designated areas. If you are not staying in the dorms or the hotel, you should let us know so that we can provide a parking permit for you.

Lecture Locations:

All lectures will be in the Wang Center -- Lecture Hall 2. A campus map is available online http://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/maps. The schedule is located here: nnpss2013_timetable-2.pdf.
