LOCATION
Bloomington campus of Indiana University The 2006 National Nuclear Summer School will be held on the campus of Indiana University, located close to downtown Bloomington, Indiana, about 50 miles south of Indianapolis Indiana. To acquaint you with the scenic Bloomington campus, we invite you to take a virtual campus tour.
The IU Bloomington campus is a careful blend of traditional and modern architecture within a park-like environment. Made of locally quarried limestone, the University buildings add beauty and charm to the scenic campus. Bloomington offers the charm of a small town and the sophistication of a cultural capital with international caliber performance in opera, music and theater.
Indiana Memorial Union (lodging, session, meals) Most of the activities related to the summer school, including lodging, session rooms and many meals will take place in or around the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU). The IMU is located at the center of campus, within short walking distance of downtown Bloomington. The IMU has wireless and hardwire internet access. Additional information about lodging at the IMU is available in the “lodging” section of this web site.
Recreation On campus Directly across the street from the IMU is one of two campus recreational facilities – including tennis, basketball, racquetball, handball courts; an indoor and outdoor track; a weight room. Arrangements have been made for Summer School participants to have day passes to use this facility (HPER – Health, Physical Education and Recreation).
In addition to HPER, you will find that the campus provides many opportunities for pleasant running and walking - along winding paths, through woods and along a stream.
Off campus We have incorporated a variety of off campus excursions into the Summer School schedule. We welcome the opportunity to acquaint you some of the unique and interesting features of south-central Indiana – an area of the United States which is often overlooked in its interest and beauty.
Local Time Zone At the time of the Summer School, Bloomington will be on Eastern Daylight Time, the same time as New York City and the East Coast of the United States; one hour ahead of Chicago.
Weather Temperatures in south-central Indiana at the end of July are hot and humid. Hotel and meeting rooms are air conditioned and are often cool. We suggest that you bring clothing to accommodate both the hot outdoors and cool, indoor air-conditioned indoor facilities. Local weather information is available through the National Weather Services.
