University of Washington
Physics Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Summer 2005
General Information and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General Information

Program

Selected undergraduates will participate in basic research during a ten-week summer program on the campus of the University of Washington. Each student will be matched with a faculty advisor. Students will spend the ten weeks working with the advisor and the advisor's group. Near the end of the program, they will write a short summary paper and give a presentation about their research experience.

Dates

The 2005 program will run from June 20 - August 26, 2005. We will be able to shift the dates to accommodate students with early fall terms.

Location

The program will be held at the University of Washington's Seattle campus. Seattle offers the culture and convenience of a major metropolitan area, with many things for visitors to see and do. At the same time, there are excellent outdoor recreation opportunities: the city is close to the Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges (and Mt. Rainier). Additionally, while Seattle is located on Puget Sound, three freshwater lakes lie within the city limits.

Program Support

Program support for 2005 includes the following.

Eligibility

We will give preference to applicants who will have finished their junior years by Summer, 2005. Women and minority group members are especially encouraged to apply. The UW Physics and Astronomy building is modern and ADA-friendly.

Because of the way our funding works, we can accept applications only from US citizens and permanent residents of the US.

Admission is competitive. While GPA is a factor, there is no minimum GPA: all the application materials will be considered, including the GPA, the transcript, the letters of reference, and the application itself.
